From time to time we make one of these.. an extreme character grained frame, usually for a mirror. This particular example was a commission, using a four by one foot bevel edged mirror, framed in waney edged elm.. a plank we’ve had in stock some ten years or so, waiting for just such a project.
We make these in all different shapes and sizes, with the dimensions and proportion usually dictated by the donor plank of wood. The corner joints are butted and biscuit jointed, and the mirror rebate is routed once the frame is made.
Filling the knots and burrs is an essential part of the process; we use resin coloured to match the wood, sanding and finishing the surface to look natural. After all it’s the fantastic natural look of the grain, especially its extreme character, that makes these frames so attractive.

Looks really good, Tim. What finish did you apply?
So far just sanding sealer. Will build with finishing oil
It’s looking absolutely amazing. Such beautiful wood and so skilfully used.
Thanks Wendy, glad you like it ?
