Bird boxes worth tweeting about

Usually we witter on about framing related activities, because that’s what we are mostly doing in our day job. But our adult woodwork classes run all year, on Tuesday afternoons and evenings. From time to time we post some pretty pictures of the student’s work. Over the last two terms we have had an unusually high proportion of beginners, not necessarily new to woodwork, but new to our workshop. These woodwork beginners always start with the ‘familiarization project’, which is to make a humble bird-box.   This project covers the basics, including the use of woodwork machines, and we usually […]

When an idea becomes reality

We are known as picture framers, and yes that much is true. But, and it may be our ever so slightly biased view here, we are a little more than that. We are creative. In other words we can produce simple frames to order within tight deadlines and strict budgets. But importantly (especially for our sanity), as artists/designers we relish a challenge. We get our kicks from listening to our customers describing their wishes, and coming up with something that fits the bill. Hopefully the result exceeds their expectations. A few months ago we began this process on a very […]

Woodwork classes.. an update

A stripey coffee table by Des

Mostly we post stories on our picture framing related activities, and it’s easy to forget that our weekly woodwork classes go on throughout the year. Open to all, beginners or improvers (a category that includes absolutely everyone), these classes have been running continuously for around thirty five years, moving to our Riverside workshop about a decade ago. Making things, as we’ve said before, is vitally important to us all. Not everyone has access to a workshop and tools, nor the confidence to use them. We try to provide all that. For many of our regulars attending a regular class is […]

From odd requests come some unusual frames..

Gluing the hexagonal oak frame

The run up to Christmas was, for us, marked by two things. Firstly there was more demand than we anticipated for bespoke framing.. mostly either for personalized presents, or to get pictures up on display before families came home for the holiday. This was a nice problem to have, and with a little extra hard work we managed to meet everyone’s deadline. But also in this mix, there were a few slightly unusual requests, which made a welcome change and gave us what we really love.. a bit of a challenge! One job required us to sympathetically frame a pair […]

Two very different answers to a familiar problem

hallway cupboard

Here at Uckfield Framing Company (as you might guess from our name) most of our work is making picture frames. Sometimes we frame mirrors and make display cases for 3D objects, and occasionally we design make and even install items of bespoke furniture. Coincidentally, over the last month we have been asked to make hall storage units for two homes, albeit for families with very different requirements. The one shown above plainly shows the familiar problem to be solved in the ‘before’ shot; that of stowing away all the stuff families need to keep close to the front door, except […]
